| Day of Rest |
Blu Greenberg, Orthodox Jew and wife of Rabbi Irving Greenberg, speaks about her existence and adherence to the Jewish experience in this week's interview as we move from the familiar of our own Christian tradition to other expressions.
Shabbat, High Holy days, family, ritual, ethics, prayer, meals, and miracles are all part of the milieu of Judaism in its orthodox tradition for Blu and her existence.
"I never really chose Judaism, it chose me (divine election)...lots of people have been chosen, but the Jews were chosen for a special role."
"techiyat hametim, the revival or restoration of life. It's one of the blessings we say every day when we pray to 'the God who restores life, resurrects the dead.' "
One of the most powerful teachings of Judaism
"you're put here on earth to do some good, to improve the world, to repair the world, to make a difference...although it is also a pleasure, life is a responsibility."
"ethical teaching is primary...I know some Jews who are more ritually observant than others, but I would not consider them ethical people."
"the old question of good and evil in the universe, I haven't resolved the 'evil' part."
"Shabbat ambience"
"You sit for two or three hours at the table (Shabbat meal,) just being together, talking and learning about life from each other."
"We bless our children every Friday night."
The High Holy Days: Different form Shabbat:
"They're about turning yourself around, re-examining your life. They're about the deeper questions of life." (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur)
"You get life as a gift everyday, and you make it worthwhile while you have it."
"Succoth - appreciation for our bounty."
"Passover - focus on redemption."
"Shavuot - celebration regarding receiving the Torah."
"Chanukah and Purim - where God performed saving miracles for the Jewish peoples."
Unceasing miracles
"Hasdei Hashem ki lo tamnu, God's acts of loving kindness never cease. My father said, "Once again they were saved."
