"Buddhism teaches us not to try to run away from suffering." So speaks, Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen Buddhist now residing in France. A person whose Buddhism was "engaged" in protest to the fighting by both sides during the Vietnam conflict in the 1960s. "Thich, a title meaning a member of the extended family of the Buddha, Hanh presents himself as an integral member of the family of humanity. His practice of mindfulness and its manifestation as action in the world are important similarities to some of the fundamentals of our own Christian teachings..
Below are some of his comments:
Meditation is to be aware of what is going on in yourself and around you.
Engaged Buddhism is just globalism.
Engaged Buddhism, active but still maintaining the spiritual element within yourself.
Community building sangha is our true practice.
Everyone can practice "mindfulness" without becoming Buddhist.
